All Things AB Separatism (split fm Liberal Minority Government 2025 - ???)

Long form podcasts take the wind out of the MSM narrative sails. DS is not some crazy right winger after all.
Well, she did describe herself as a “libertarian conservative,” admitting she’s more right-ish than Red Tory. “Crazy” I’ll leave to diagnosticians :) She had to have some elements if the whole story pulled out of her by the host, but I’d say more than other politicians I’ve heard in long form.

When I think of people I know...some of them in uniform....attitudes have changed. From high school drop out oil patch rig workers to very educated professionals there has been a change in last 10 years.

They are incredibly proud of the country...most of them have come from other parts of Canada and/or USA due to the opportunities Alberta offered our parents and/or own families. But the last 10 years has changed attitudes in a manner it's tough to describe...some of the most patriotic people I know were questioning the value of Canada due to the Federal Gov't actions.

Even myself...a red conservative/blue liberal...felt a bunch of that 20 years ago. There is a huge East/West divide in the country frankly split across Northern Ontario. Always felt welcome in Northern Ontario but for the folks from S. Ontario (own extended family included) there is a severe disconnect on what life is like outside the Golden horse shoe and south shore of Quebec. Maritimer's get along with Albertans well because...well...so many of them are out here it's more like family reunions.

But despite the frustration there is also a simple desire...let me go to work, let me pay my bills, and quit micro-managing every aspect of my life and calling me evil because I work hard to support my family....especially when it is to buy votes in another part of the country.

A more positive tone, less vote buying in Central Canada at the cost of the west, and removal of some of the micro-managing aspects of Federal Policy/Legislation will help a ton.

Frankly if I was the Federal gov't I'd start with the MB Premier's list of nation-building infrastructure...a positive, mature response, directed at national benefit...and then look what can be done. It's a much better starting point than the AB Premier's whining list of change all legislation but does address some of the same concerns...and while shovels are digging then start to consider the more difficult piece of legislation change to be fairer across the country.

I hope I am around when Wab Kinew decides to run for PM, regardless of which party.

100% agree. Not perfect...doesn't try to be but is honest where past wasn't 100%. More importantly speak well and is a positive mature voice and inspires people. I have no time for spoiled childern or zealots that only belive one way is possible regardless of political party.

Saying past wasn't 100% is quite the understatement. A history like this would normally make political life impossible. But he is educated and winning his riding handily. People are clearly willing to overlook his past... this is interesting.

Curious, was there a concerted round-the-clock media campaign highlighting his faults?

I recall a bit of stink during a past election.

The now Premier if I recall walked up the stand and proceeded to outline all his past actions that normally would make him untouchable as a politician. Then outlined the changes he made in his life to put that process behind him. Then his vision looking forward.

Transparent, honest, and looking forward.

A true "Elder" to use the Cree title for leadership.

Would much rather shake hands with a honest and reformed person despite their checkered past than a slimeball who thinks they're getting away with things.

His redemption story was a feature.

Amen.

Too many people forget that life works the opposite way of how school and usually our employment does.

Life tests every single person first, and sometimes in ways they couldn't even fathom - and the lessons come AFTER the tests...

I'd much rather shake hands with a seasoned person who's learned from their experiences & tries to do good, than someone who arrogantly hasn't yet realized that the rules of life apply to them also

You know what they say about only one opportunity to make a good first impression? The lingering questions negative opinions about Premier Smith would, in many cases, have originated from her October 1998 election to the Calgary Board of Education.

Since the selection of Danielle Smith as leader of the Wildrose Alliance, a number of readers have suggested that I take a closer look at her time as a Trustee with the Calgary Board of Education (CBE) from 1998 to 1999. Not completely knowing what I would discover as I dug through the ProQuest archives, I uncovered what I consider to be a collection some of the most bizarre shenanigans that I have ever seen from Canadian elected officials. My sources largely included articles published by the Calgary Herald and the National Post.

I remember that 1998 election, it might have been the first time that I voted in municipal and school board elections. Or rather, I remember the clusterfuck that was the CBE in the aftermath; Ms Smith was the school trustee for my ward. The partisan political farm team mentality of candidates/trustees for school board was something that negatively coloured my opinion of those who engaged in that entry level of politics back then and continues to this day. There were/are some genuinely dedicated individuals who ran for school board office in the hope of improving public education. My opinion was that Ms Smith was not one of them.
