I agree. Just compare Turkey and Canada.

Search these forums and you'll find comparing is a tricky game.  The standard of compensation and benefits for a CAF member is different than a Turkish Army member.  It makes comparing absolute personnel numbers a tedious game.

Of course, never meant to say otherwise. Just trying to say that those in charge of using the defence budget to buy military equipment don't seem to be doing the best job of choosing the best items ( both in terms of price and numbers). The standard of compensation and benefits that the CAF offers members is probably one of the best in the world and the average salary is also one of the highest. To be honest, I don't know exactly how much compensation and benefits the CAF gives it's members ( in terms of dollars since it is obviously different per case) and how much the salary difference is as opposed to Turkey but I don't think it is a difference of more than 6 billion dollars in total per year.

Ashkan,

You'd be surprised actually.  A huge chunk of our budget goes towards personnel costs - not just salary, but extra pay for deployments, operations, various pay entitlements depending on where you are, cost of living, helping members move from one base to another, helping to pay for their post secondary educations, education reimbursements, reimbursement for members who have to travel X kilometers to work if they happen to be in remote areas.  It adds up.

We also have forces deployed around the world, which Turkey does not.  Military aircraft can be assisting in Europe, or over the Middle East, or participating in exercises like RIMPAC.  Sometimes all 3 at once.  Ditto for the Navy, having a few ships out in various parts of the world on various exercises & operations.  (Increase costs of personnel, plus fuel, maintenance, accommodations, etc)

That being said, I do agree with you.  I don't think anybody on these forums will argue with you that we don't get the most bang for our buck when it comes to equipment purchases...and that's far more of a political-process problem than a DND problem.

^^ Best to continue that topic in another thread.  Plenty already exist where we discuss the various organizational shortcomings of the CF/DND.  Lets keep this on track regarding Western artillery capabilities.

All good Ashkan, we all do.  Welcome to the forums btw, good to see new names in the convos =)
