CAN-USA 2025 Tariff Strife (split from various pol threads)

He still has the usual suspects running the PMO. My feeling is that he's going to be the front man while the PMO does the ground game. Not being a politician or knowing those inner workings, he'll be dependent on them to keep him pointed in the direction they want to go. As long as Telford and Butts are still involved, there won't be any changes from the way things ran under trudeau.
It very well could be the case to keep them in place until the election is over - the if he wins, the brooms come out and an all around cleaning occurs.

I've seen The RCR do drill...

If he wins, he'll keep them. Why would you fire the people that just got you elected?

It's like all the promises to change our voting and election away from our FPTP system. Once the party, that’s promising electoral reform wins, they are loath to change the system that put them there.

Well, I'm sure THIS'LL help ....
Disrespectul comments? If that is his excuse for not talking to Trump’s team, that tells me he either has nothing to deal with or he's scared of meeting Trump or he's got no confidence in his team to tackle the negotiations.

You don't shy away from talks that'll affect two or more countries economies and trade, because a bully called you a name. That is no less childish than the person showing the supposed disrespect.

Pretty darned thin skinned for a guy claiming to be the financial saviour of our broken economy.

Because I (Carney) don't trust them.

We’re dealing with an administration that gets upset about suits in the white house, not saying thank you every 5 mins and calling Ford disrespectful for his stance all while they make fun of our country and PM.

Carney is doing two things. Shaping the conversation and having them take that ridiculous annexation thing off the table and to get serious. It’s a non starter that should not even be part of a négociation. It’s also the thing that has Canadians up in arms so he looks like he’s dealing with it.

The second part is him setting himself up going into an election. The last thing he needs is him and Trump in a photo only to have CPC propaganda machine use it in an attack ad.

How is he shying away? He said he’s ready for a call. But he’s not about to be pushed around with stupid stuff like the 51st state BS.

Validating their comments by acknowledging and acting on them is even worse and toddler like.

He's ready for a call? He's not in the driver seat. He doesn't dictate when the US meets his requirements to initiate talks.

Won't be pushed around? He already is. He's basing our whole negotiations on some spiteful comments, that hold no water.

A true leader and negotiator is able to rise above baseless taunts. Right now, he's playing Trump’s game. And Trump doesn't mind.

Trump is not about to jump into real, meaningful negotiations until we have an election and he know who is really speaking for Canada.

And I like the approach. I don't want Carney and Clowns to negotiate anything for us and then get voted out.

Sit back and relax. Taunts, jabs and up and down temporary tariffs are all you're likely to see until after an election.

I get that you are on team Trump but that is a very jaundiced account of what is happening. You are only focused on that one thing and not the rest of what he said.

If that is the case about taunts and jabs until it’s over then Carney’s statement on it is quite appropriate given that it is meant for a domestic audience.

If you've been paying attention, even a little bit, you'd have seen the shift in who I do and don't support. It's been like that for more than a month. I don't support Trump.

However, I understand your false claims and bias of me, is a way of moving the conversation and trying to nullify my positions.

Just another stupid MAGA supporter. Pfffttt.

If I speak about Trump, it's about his methodology. I am just telling it like it is. How I see two sides interacting and why I think it's so.

Please don't try to insult my intelligence again with your false claims and bias.

Nothing a county's leader says is for the domestic audience. It’s all international rhetoric. Whether it pertains to another country or not.

Unless I missed something - and I don’t think I have - this is the first time you’ve actually said that. A couple weeks ago I pushed you on it a bit. You got your back up and said you were rethinking/reconsidering your support. You didn’t repudiate it or actually say it had changed, just that you were giving it a rethinks I basically said cool, stepped back and gave you some space on it. Good to hear you have in fact had a change of heart- but since this is the first we’re hearing it, you can’t really give the guy shit for believing your views remained the same that you’ve been VERY vocal about here for over half a decade.

Food for thought. But now the rest of us do know, so we can bear that in mind.

Out of curiosity, what was it out of everything going on that finally changed your support?

I have been paying attention.

Not sure what false claims you think I am making. I never called you stupid either. Just that you are team trump. You’ve stated in the past that he’s better for us if he’s president. You stated that you have worked for the Trump campaign in the past. I can only infer you are on his team.

Your position as I see as with a few others is generally that what Trump is doing is a sort of tough love thing. I disagree.

If that isn’t the case then fine.

And yes, leaders say things for domestic audiences and international ones all the time.

Third thing- he's also signalling a pretty blatant offramp for Trump, that we're ready to reopen CUSMA and talk trade seriously - IF 51st state talk goes away.

I don’t blame Carney one bit for refusing to discuss trade until Trump’s attempts at humiliating both Canada and the Prime Minister’s office ends. If we allow ourselves to be treated as an inferior, then we are inferior. Trudeau should never have put up with the name calling. All of this reminds me of the Korean War period when the North Koreans tried using psychological tactics to have the Americans and allies sit at the negotiating table in chairs that were much shorter than those of the North Koreans. So if Trump keeps disparaging us, then we need to wait until other politicians and key leaders in the U.S. start pressuring him to behave and negotiate in a responsible manner. In short, fuck him.

Pretty hard to mount some sort of protest movement when the DNC is at its lowest level of favorability in 40 years. If this keeps up, Trump might hold the house and senate at midterms.... and get that third term after all.
There have been protests by (predominantly veterans) groups at every state capital for the last two weeks. Angry elderly veterans who don’t have much to lose if their VA assistance is gone…

A lot of Republicans are ducking town halls, including ones in fairly safe areas. Others are distancing themselves from MAGA, and the Trump Administration.

You can’t slash the people and programs that has been done and not have angst, furthermore it’s also noted that the Budget isn’t getting reeled in, just more spending and contracts to MAGA aligned entities.

Now DOGE has gone and entered (illegally) a non governmental entity and a bunch have been arrested in DC.

You should just be satisfied I self identified. I owe no explanations or justifications to anyone. Sorry.

Any comments about what trump is doing are not an endorsment of him. I'm simply offering insight into what I think they are doing and that has been the case since the threads kicked up. If I think they have carney over a barrel and give reasons why I think so, again, that’s not love of trump. It's a critique of their style. If I critique carney, its for the same reasons. He's as big a narcissist and liar as trump. There's plenty of bullshit from both to justify an even, neutral, negative stance between them. Both have the same dictitorial aura around them. One is a bombastic, jingoistic isolationist and the other a globalist, eurocentric EU fanboy, WEF board member and author of the Glasgow Net Zero green plan. The biggest, most harmful climate scam since Gore's Inconvenient Truth.

Both leaders are junk and neither is good for their country.

I'm now an equal opportunity skeptic and detractor.
