Liberal (Minority/Majority) Government 2025 - ???

Europe not so sure it wants Canada.
Germany and France are big dogs in the EU. Macron is done (and so might be France) and Merz is struggling with keeping the country out of the clutch of a recession and those further right.

So that is two old, scarred, and injured wolves being asked to accept the shiny, clean new wolf from another territory.

Not going to end well

I’ve been out for a few years now, I don’t have access to any of that. I’m just a dirty civvie now, drinking from the RUMINT.

Honestly, I think the trade itself is underscoped to be honest. But they gotta start somewhere.

Personally, I think MP should be reduced right down to green trade that does the traditional MP duties prescribed in doctrine, like handling PWs. Everything else? Give it to SF. Make them purple. And legislate so they have some immediate authorities on use of force and detention in the vicinity of an air base or assets they are protecting.

CETA has yet to be fully ratified. Despite being agreed in 2017 10 countries, including France and Belgium, are still dragging their feet.

Europe or Germany?

Germany has been strongly against Turkey joining the EU for the longest time. It will dilute their argument if Canada is allowed to move forward in some manner and Turkey is not.

It only takes one.

The European Union struggles to maintain a unified front. Implemention of deals often seems to be a confusion of bi-national deals due to local interpretation of Union policies.

Yes true, Ireland is online to implement soon after Carney's visit and a recent Irish court decision. I would expect Poland to sign as well if they pick us (Candu) for their next nuc power station. Belgium is just as useless, if not even more so than when I lived there 30yrs ago. The place is barely holding together as a country. Italy could very well sign (if they are one of the holdouts) if we join GCAP and make a substantial commitment to it.

Yes, see my response below. The Irish concern is a case in point.

I think the MP should be re-scoped to be the basis for the SF, or at least roll them in together. SF can also do deployed ops security including the handling of PWs. SF should be much more than an idle guard on post... lots of high end duties and an easy to draft training/succession pathway into specialty fields for those with the aptitude, to manage this properly and fully for the CAF. Last I looked a long time ago, the MPs were about 1100 personnel strong. That's a damn good start to getting platoon sizes and company sizes into the right bases right off the bat. Not sure what the detachment size at Cold Lake is, but say it's already 30... add or subtract to that as needed and re-distribute pers to meet the security need. All SF would be purple trade and the operational arm under VCDS/DGDS/SF if that structure fits. It would be awesome.

Bold move, lets see if they follow though though.

I can hear the drums being beaten now. They will all want their settlements before they agree to anything.

I suspect you would lose most if not all those 1100 pers when the job they signed up for was pulled out from under them, they release and head to any one of the dozens of civilian police agencies currently hurting for bodies who are paying nearly double in some cases and situated in places that actually have a Costco nearby.

Most or all? No. Some... even many, sure.

And we have a deal, in record time.

Canada and the United Arab Emirates signed a free trade deal on Tuesday they say was reached in a “record” time of 47 days, and have also agreed to start talks on an extradition treaty.

Um, he's not exactly helping his case. Would this not be something that falls on the wrong side of the Canadian Investment Act, and even a couple other antitrust laws in both countries?

Goncalves said that his original aim when purchasing Stelco was to keep the plant from undercutting in the U.S.

"I bought Stelco because I could not afford anymore having Stelco flooding the market here in the United States to the detriment of my own company," he said.

An extradition treaty with a country not known for rule of law and attachment to civil rights? I’m not really thrilled about this.

Nor am I thrilled about getting cozy with Erdogan’s Turkey.
Extraditions aren’t without serious checks and balances, and various recourse through the courts. They aren’t a simple matter of someone asks and the other country reciprocates unquestioningly. Before we enter any such treaty there will be assurances in place to ensure that we as a country are comfortable with the outcome.

The flip side benefit for Canada is that right now there are plenty of problem children who have absconded to the UAE and who are out of reach of Canadian justice for that reason. It would close an attractive refuge.
