Liberal (Minority/Majority) Government 2025 - ???

Bring on the reactors.

And even more ideally, enriching fuel domestically.

The Shoebody GIF

A snap election could happen at any time, so he doesn’t really get that relief. At any point the PM can advise the GG to dissolve Parliament and call an election, subject only to the legally required 37 to 51 day election period.

It’s actually a pleasant surprise that PM Carney has not called one in an effort to get a rock solid majority and reset the four year clock.
PMMC is too smart to waste his momentum and opportunity on a silly game like that. The CPC are going to keep his government trucking along even if he didn't have a majority.

If you're surprised by him acting this way, I suspect you're far more of a partisan hack than you admit to being on this site. The only people wishing for an election after the last one are diehard LPC supporters and wack-job CPC supporters who don't trust polls.

Silly game? He has a razor thin majority, very subject to any number of things that can shave it. He’s also subject to having to manage his own caucus and keep any dissenters in line. He’s inherited and is trying to bend to his own will a party that’s been governing for a decade; he’s disrupting its own entrenched power dynamics and factions and aiming to supplant them with his own. Wanting to potentially nip that would not be a ‘silly game’. Nor would be silencing all the dumb voices about a ‘false majority’ or what have you.

I agree with his course of action. I’m pleasantly surprised that he didn’t bend more than he has to the politically rational advice of the many people surrounding him, many of whom I’m sure have urged him to consider it. Calling an election to reaffirm his mandate would have been rational and defensible.

Why are you making this personal? I have no party affiliation. My voting record supports that. Had JT remained in charge of the Liberals I was happy to help change that diaper.

I’m not one of those wishing for an election, I’ve simply outlined a number of reasons that it would have been a (not the only) reasonable course of action in his shoes. Taking a shot at me as a ‘partisan hack’ is uncalled for and frankly should be beneath you.

We prefer back door majority.

It's just business acumen. He knew he could make some easy acquisitions and skip the effort (and stigma) of a $600 million plus election.

Benefit of an election now would be testing the support for all the floor crossers in real time.

Ugh I want to stay away from this thread...

I see this more as more Carney kneeling on the neck of the CPC. He knows they have to prop him up. So make them be a flaccid phallus opposition.

Loosing massively would be amazing for the CPC. It would reset them. Carney doesn't want that.

Its a power play. A simple out right political power play. Its twisting the bayonet.

I’ll take “unsafe Googles” for $800, Alex.

Meh, he’s not done anything to the CPC they haven’t chosen to do to themselves. A reset is entirely within their reach any time they want one. And the CPC don’t need to prop him up anymore. They dodged the election more effectively than they ever intended.

The LPC are signaling they're open to privatizing our airports, and now ports. If they forge ahead with this I'll be curious if they're content with the backdoor majority or call an election to firm up their authority.

I wish they would. Canada needs this.

I could see this kicking off a fight with organized labour, particularly at the seaports. There will be fears of private ownership pushing further automation. It’s a longstanding barrier to efficiency and productivity.

and you can bet that Beijing will be right in there with the dollars. It is a very dangerous road to travel. What they are after is more money to spend

It would be very interesting to see that broken down by residence type. I wonder if this is more collapsing of the house (or I guess tower) of cards that is leveraged micro-condo portfolios bought for the short term rentals market? A lot of those have gone underwater in terms of equity value versus mortgages, and cannot be sold other than at a steep loss.

Indeed. That’s where the national security provisions of the Investment Canada Act come in.

If privatized, hopefully they get picked up by large institutional investors like pension funds. CPPIB for example has a sizeable portfolio of foreign port holdings.

Here it is. Taking the pragmatic approach to keep costs down via NG.

The Clean Electricity Regulations are also going to be amended to allow for more flexibility nationwide.

Also worth a note.

4. Make more of the technologies and components powering our grid here at home

  • As we build the clean economy of the future, Canada’s new government is ensuring our industries can bridge to seize its opportunities. These consultations will explore how to grow domestic manufacturing capacity so that more of the components powering our grid are made in Canada.

Natural gas to play key role in strategy to double Canada’s electricity grid by 2050

And just why shouldn't asylum seekers be allowed to vote for party members they want to represent them as future Canadians? Or IDing yourself with an Amazon order.

Seems like someone is a sore loser.

Ontario Liberals can't sweep voting irregularities under rug

“Dozens and dozens of asylum-seekers voted with their refugee claimant documents. Others were able to prove their addresses using just an apartment lease, sometimes two of which listed voters under 18,” Katsouris said.

“Other non-standard forms of ID accepted included digital report cards and Amazon orders. One man even voted with a foreign visitor’s visa.”

I wish there was a more applicable word than "hopefully". If Beijing makes an offer you can bet it will cost us dearly if history is any indication

I mean, the very first time I voted I didn't have a drivers license or an ID at the time. So I used the shipping information ripped off a box to prove where I lived and my mother to vouch for me.
