I don't know about that...
I think it really depends on whether those politicians are representing border states who benefit from a strong trading relationship with us or not.
But when would the tit for tat end? And how far down that road does either side really wanna go?
Be a good neighbour. Send water bombers. Send fire crews. Send DART when needed. Etc etc (And BE PUBLIC ABOUT IT!)
It builds up A LOT of good will among the people who need the help, it fosters great working relationships between agencies, and is just the decent thing to do.
Politicians come and go. But a generally friendly view of another country among the population remains for a generation or two.
Pettiness won't really make anything better. But being a solid neighbour & assisting when requested will...even if it takes a while.
If you are right and there will be no shortage of politicians hostile to Canada, it will make it harder for future Canadian governments to ask future American governments for special consideration on things if we've been dicks for the past few years.

Maybe a quick stop at the paint shop to re-paint the aircraft red and white. Even if we have to do it with a brush or roller like the invasion stripes prior to D-Day.
I like it when our electrical utility crews head south after a tornado or hurricane and they are flying Canadian flags in convoy.

It’s one thing to be a good neighbour, it’s another to be a good neighbour when your neighbour is trying to cause as much issues as possible for you and has been for a while.
Obviously there is a realpolitik side to all this, but I don’t like dealing with bullies who reneg on their agreements and then proceed to kick you when your down in spite of all the assistance you have rendered in the past. Some of the reason we are down is because we are actively aiding them.
Our people are literally dying to help theirs and they still just seek to harm us.
Alternatively we advertise how much of a good ally and friend we have been, withdraw support and make it very clear their actions and words have consequences.
Clearly the Americans have taken offence that the only two countries who retaliated against their tariffs were us and China. That is a point of pride for me. It doesn’t seem to matter if you stand up or lay down to them, they are going to treat you horribly either way.

Canadian economy reacting, stabilizing and not rapidly but steadily expanding, Bank of Canada Governor: Tiff Macklem. Inflation stabilized 2.5 range, unemployment stabilized ~6.5%, Q2 GDP growth at 2.5% annualized. 2026 GDP projection 0.7%, 1.8% for both 2027and 2028.
I don’t know enough about international cooperation in aerial firefighting… Do ‘we’ send help in the sense that Canadian federal or provincial governments benevolently dispatch their own water bomber fleets to fires in the U.S.? Or are Canadian water bombers in the States privately owned and simply hopping on a contract? I want to be confident about what we’re claiming credit for and if there’s actually credit there to be claimed.

They request for the help and pay the salaries, travel, etc. of the firefighters/equipment provided. Vice versa if we request and they come to Canada. These are government resources not private enterprises.
So we’re sending government resources but on full cost recovery?

More or less, seems like there is a daily rate they calculate somehow. Reminds me a bit of the Hessians except it is applied both ways.
Thanks for that. Sounds a bit more transactional than benevolent on our part if we’re renting out idle capacity when we don’t need it.
