Liberal (Minority/Majority) Government 2025 - ???

Victor Davis Hanson has some zingers lately about Canada and PMMC’s handling of US relations, if anyone is interested in another perspective.

A longer read, but interesting. New York Times has published their full hour long interview with PM Carney and about ten of their reporters. Not a ton of depth on any one subject obviously, but it’s pretty wide ranging and worth a read over a coffee.

It most certainly is, thanks for the link.

When someone uses the term “tail risk” there is a very high likelihood that they know what they’re talking about.

uh oh...

I'm sure someone will be here soon to tell this is fine, everything is fine.

Fine? No. We do remain the target of significant predatory trade actions by our largest and dominant trading partner though, so it’s unsurprising. We’ll see in a few months how it’s looking with more data coming in.

Frankly I’m surprised we’re not in outright recession. A lot of our defensive play is strategic/structural with pretty long lead times before we can expect to realize much benefit. Resource projects take time to get off or (or into) the ground.

Strategy continues. Weather the storm best we can, and diversify diversify dirvesify.

As expected, the loyal media and pundits have come out attacking a steel company now undertaking layoffs who have been critical if PMMC’s tactics and Chinese steel dumping.

From another angle, this data might influence the Bank of Canada not to raise interest rates - (as long as inflation remains tame) - which will not sink the housing market, auto sales, general consumer sediment and will not raise the borrow costs of the Federal Government.

Down in the US the various pundits are preaching a 70+% chance that the US Federal Reserve will raise interest rates another 1/4 in October. This will further sink the US housing market, auto sales, will drive up the value of the USD (which makes US exports that much more expensive) and will add billions upon billions to their borrowing costs.

There is always 2 sides to a coin.

What are you even talking about? Are you saying that the 'disloyal' media will be cheering on said steel company for their laying off of 500 people?

Bollocks

Bollocks.

The media (and politicians of every stripe at every level of government) are not attacking the company because they were critical of the goverments policies. They are attcking the US owned foreign company who fired Canadian employees as a direct result of the tariffs that have been established...by the US government.

Especially since the Stelco CEO applauded the tariffs initially to glaze the emperor a bit.

Pretty much... money talks, but it also walks...

‘No amount of money’ would have avoided Stelco slowdown, job loss: CEO

Goncalves said without the ability to export to the United States at the current tariff rates, his “temporary solution” is to concentrate on products that still make the company money and “wait until the situation normalizes.”

While that could take two years – or longer – Goncalves said the company is committing to boost employment, once the trade war settles, allowing the company to export Canadian-made steel.

“Let’s assume that we were able to produce galvanized steel again. What am I going to do? Re-hire everybody and go back to produce galvanized Steel.

Applauding tariffs meant to protect the North American steel industry from chinese dumping into Canada which hurts Canadian and American steel. This is one of the main reasons Canada walked out on US trade deal, Canada refuses to align with the US on its position regarding China’s predatory trade practices.

You mean those chinese products slapped with anti dumping duties? Most chinese products are with anti dumping duties based on country of origin. Not entry, so even coming in via canada they would get slapped as chinese products entering the US. There is no such thing as using canada to avoid dumping in in the US. The same duties apply at the border. In fact dumping into canada to ship to the US would hit them twice.
