Why ?

Seriously?

I mean if the RCN wants to form Marines then fill your boots. I'm not carrying water for the infantry or recce folks. But seriously, there's a certain amount of skill in doing dismounted patrols and fighting if need be. It's a skill set that I don't expect the average sailor to have anymore than the infantry are operators of blue water craft. Each to his own.

I obviously see more to littoral patrol ops than merely cruising the shoreline.

I think the only solution to all this is to just copy the Japanese in WW2 where every service got planes, boats, infantry, and of course aircraft carriers.

I myself am excited to work alongside 1st Maritime Armored Division Angus Töpshee!

If the CCG integrates more with DND, then the need for dedicated boarding may grow a fair bit. Thankfully for the button and bow types, there is historical precedent to work with.

We don't need marines. Our job isn't fight any deeper than the jettys and shores lines.

I actually trained for that what back when I was on my Naval LANDING Boarding Party course.

The military exists to allow the government to act in defence of its interests. It always has done. Police forces, the newer government force, was raised explicitly as an alternative to the armed military to control co-operative civil population.

There are no tasks that are not military.

And it seems there are no laws that are not martial in your envisioned world.

All of that is fine and good if you want to draw the line where you are drawing it.

There are places along our coasts, inaccessible by land, where you may want to, or need to, routinely go deeper and do more than that. Sometimes a boat is just transport for other people and other capabilities.

I guess we'll never see eye to eye on this one. I find that strange seeing as there are literally several dozens of examples of countries who have Marines as part of their military, most of whom use them in defence of their own shorelines rather than for expeditionary operations, and who almost always have less shoreline or shore-based infrastructure to patrol and protect than Canada does.

I can't quite understand why our navy, and in fairness, much of the army, dismisses the need for that. I can see why when the money and people are in tight supply, but the need is there and window of opportunity is opening. We should be looking a bit more outside the box and start developing a comprehensive and joint A2/AD strategy in all of its aspects.

Any plan should encompass the worst-case scenario. The worst-case scenario is a lawless world. A world in which order, our order and our rules, need to be imposed.

Others are only too willing to impose their order and rules on us.

Our tolerant society has been built on 500 years of hope fuelled progress.
Unfortunately the order that we imposed was not universally welcomed.
