One of the other things I read online is CRA have a lot of indeterminate employees in acting positions, and hire terms in behind them. There is an expectation that many of those indeterminates will need to return to their substantive positions in order to get the actual work done.

When we were moved from DFO to TC, they said no unfunded positions, either justify them or get rid of them. TC was a bit of a annoying place to work at times, but they had their admin shit together.

I’m pretty sure I’ve seen this before. Another company comes in. Company realizes how expensive it is to service all of Canada. Prices go up. People even more unhappy.

Canada Post is continuing to bleed money amid fundamental shifts in mail delivery, pushing the Crown corporation to signal that something will have to change if it wants to right the ship.

Canada Post reported a $748-million annual loss before taxes for 2023 on Friday, the postal service’s sixth consecutive year in the red.

In a statement accompanying the result, the organization was blunt about the challenges facing a modern-day mail carrier.

Canada Post noted that back in 2006, the average Canadian household was receiving some seven letters a week; that’s down to just two in 2023, following the rapid rise of email and other forms of internet communication.

Alongside a decline in this transactional mail segment, Canada Post also posted revenue declines in its parcel and direct marketing services in 2023.

Canada post is a Crown Corporation without the arms length decision making ability necessary to pivot.

They were refused the ability to move legacy routes to super mailboxes, if they suggested moving to alternate day delivery for letter mail they would be shot down, and if they said "we will charge different rates for delivery depending on location and distance within Canada" they'd be tarred and feathered.

They are stuck, thanks to stupid decision making by (lately) this particular government, which was content to kick the can down the road by tying Canada Posts hands on door delivery. Well, the road has run out.

But, really, the pivot should have happened pre-2015 under the Conservatives.

If CUPW thinks they are coming out of this with: a) more pay and b) all their membership, they are sadly mistaken. Even academics on the left are saying the business model is badly broken.

There is a model for a National Postal Service. Just not with this many employees, delivering letters every day to every household in Canada.
