Heck, years ago I learned of that big train derailment/explosion in Quebec from RT 3 DAYS before I ever heard about it on a Canadian network.

It wasnt something I was deliberately looking for, as I obviously didn't know it had happened yet.

But I was just scrolling YouTube, and saw a short video by RT on it. Kept my eyes peeled, but didn't see it reported on by any other YT channels, nor on the SOMNIA site

I think it was then 2 days or so after I saw it on the news finally. (So 2 days then...)



Mind you, I haven't had cable for nearly 20 years now. So if it was covered live, I missed it. But I do try to keep a wide variety of media sources easily accessible when scrolling YT, and RT was the first channel I saw that had anything about it.

(And I wasn't the only one who saw it from a foreign source first. Our neighbours were from India, and while chatting with the mom she had said some family from home had called and asked about it, and that's how she found out about it)

I tend to scroll the likes of CTV, Global, Rebel News, CBC, etc. And some independent journalism sources such as Tucker Carlson, Redacted, MCGA, etc



Doesn't change my opinion though that mainstream journalism as a profession has lost it's way it seems.

Sure there are some great reporters & some great coverage of certain things, and some great shows that dive into topics I hadn't given much thought to that are pleasantly surprising & eye opening.

But in general, the MSM seems overly politicized these days & comes across as wanting to convey a narrative rather than just convey the facts.

If you were casually paying attention to Canadian news then you would have been immediately aware of what had happened. If you learned it from RT three days ahead of a Canadian news source, it is because you were consuming foreign news and not looking at Canadian sources. It doesn’t matter that you viewed news online and not on cable; the news was carried in both places. But, do you actually look at news site or do you rely on social media to select the stories that you will see?
