An armed CCG/RCN ship isn't going to sink a Chinese ship conducting hybrid ops. If shooting isn't happening, having guns doesn't matter.

I'm not suggesting we don't need an armed presence int he arctic, I'm just highlighting the reality that more sensors in the arctic is a massive bonus, even if those sensors are CCG.

The gear mentioned by the minister will go a long way towards establishing our presence and control in the north. So in that regards I totally agree with your statements. My problem is I remember reading a government publication regarding the discovery of an alien force in the north. The person who made the discovery was supposed to write down what he had observed and mail it to an given address in Ottawa. That is correct: Canada Post was to carry notice of an invasion. Using coast guard vessels to supplement the navy is a wonderful idea but only if there is a navy within reach to respond and that is where I disagree with your position. As I have stated before we need to start planning to take delivery of a combat capable ship ASAP. The early 2030's for the first River class is too far in the future.

The response to any incursion in the arctic is not going to be the navy. The RCAF will have weapons on site in hours, not days/weeks, like the navy would require.

i suspect whomever is committing the incursion is aware the RCAF would be the first one's to respond and would likely have some measure of air defense to welcome them. Invading is not done on a lark, it's a significant commitment.
