GlobalEye is not vapourware, given how its actively in use by the UAE, being bought by Sweden and considered by many others. The Phoenix Global based platform by IMI/L3/Korea is not proven yet though, so fair on them.


Keep in mind I am not privy to the internal of the GlobalEye however, I think the main issue at hand is available space. You have an already modified civilian business jet into an AWACS platform, now you need to try and fit the piping and rig to take the refueling on top of all this. Might need some serious redesigns to the platform to make it work. The Phoenix AWACS doesn't have that issue as AAR is built in from the start.

I was commenting more on Phoenix, more than GlobalEye. Sorry for lacking clarity.

I think their vapourware platform was their offer for the Maritime Patrol program which, if I recall, was no more than a picture and a promise.

I actually can form a mental picture of some stokers standing in front of a coal bin in an aircraft, madly shovelling into a furnace to keep the aircraft airborne.

Theoretically, Saab can put on a fuel probe in front and do hose and drogue refueling. It would be very uncomfortable and inefficient. But it can be done. They just don't want to eat the NRE cost of that design change. Paying lobbyists to get the government to remove the requirement is cheaper.

I don’t see anywhere in the literature that Phoenix has AAR.
