All Things AB Separatism (split fm Liberal Minority Government 2025 - ???)

This is just my own take on things, and isn't necessarily supported by anything other than being an Albertan thru & thru...

Alberta doesn't want to seperate.

Even those calling for Alberta to seperate, don't actually want Alberta to seperate... (there will always be an extreme view, however, regardless of what crowd is being looked at)

Albertans don't want to seperate from Canada.

Albertans are leery of, and growing more & more distrustful of, what Canada has slowly been turning into for the last decade or so.

(And we are distrustful still because it seems to be continuing down the same path it was under Trudeau...)

---

I'm a proud Canadian, and in my ideal world Canada would be/could be a strong middle power with a strong economy, strong ideals, strong values, and a country that wields it's power to do good in the world where it can.

I wore the Canadian flag with pride when I deployed in 2006 and 2010 to Afghanistan, and have always tried to look at issues through a national lense & keep the bigger picture in mind.

That being said, as much as I don't want fo see Alberta seperate from Canada, I would absolutely throw my support behind Alberta if that happens.

My values these days seem to line up far more with my fellow Albertans & my fellow Canadians than it does the federal government elected to govern us or represent us.

---

We live in interesting times, indeed...

IF Alberta leaves Canada, I want to say it's because Ottawa forced us to leave. Not because anybody here really wanted to.

But being Canadian doesn't mean what it used to mean. And that was done very intentionally by our very own federal government.

And I think the folks here in Alberta are simply being loyal to what that identity was, and meant - moreso than any interest in creating a new 'Albertan' identity.

(Maybe I'm wrong. I don't know. That's just the gist I get when I hear people chat about the issue here, whether it be family or neighbours or co-workers)

PMMC has said he is looking for projects to push through. Maybe one or two will be an oil or gas pipeline?

The linked article has NDP -13 in Calgary and marginally ahead in Edmonton.
Yes, and if you look at the last election or a riding breakdown. NDP have strong support in the core of calgary, but the far NE and NW still are strong UCP. If the NDP break that suburban support for the UCP, they will form gov.

NDP….wins elections…with more support!? Shocking news. 🤣🤦‍♂️

Haven’t had a chance to listen - how was it?

David does a good job. He's good at asking the tough questions without coming off biased or being the typical journalist dick head.

He's one of the guys who I don't share political space with but I listen to what he has to say. If I was a political leader I would want him as an advisor.

It was interesting to hear about her formative years.

I agree it's Ottawa's fault. Ottawa has been pushing it's agenda on all of Canada since trudeau entered politics. Every province has been fucked by them. The repercussions this liberal government has inflicted on the country is unforgivable. Repercussions that will haunt us for generations. Canadian livelihoods have been destroyed, homes and jobs lost, families disintegrated. Out of control immigration, illegal aliens, rampant crime, the list goes on and is long. Alberta and Smith have just had enough, other provinces are seeing the Great Oz behind the curtain. Hopefully, they can find their houevos to rebel, like Alberta, and take back what is theirs.

You left out the part about where Trudeau really helped out the local drug dealers ;)

Good long form interview with DS

Just listened to the audio podcast of this and HIGHLY recommend it as well - an hour & a quarter well spent if you're a political junkie.

Agree or disagree with the Premier's positions/actions, she seems to know the background and other options out there. I'm not surprised the host, on one of his regular podcast episodes, called her one of the best, if not the best, political communicators of the Premiers.

Long form podcasts take the wind out of the MSM narrative sails. DS is not some crazy right winger after all.

When I think of people I know...some of them in uniform....attitudes have changed. From high school drop out oil patch rig workers to very educated professionals there has been a change in last 10 years.

They are incredibly proud of the country...most of them have come from other parts of Canada and/or USA due to the opportunities Alberta offered our parents and/or own families. But the last 10 years has changed attitudes in a manner it's tough to describe...some of the most patriotic people I know were questioning the value of Canada due to the Federal Gov't actions.

Even myself...a red conservative/blue liberal...felt a bunch of that 20 years ago. There is a huge East/West divide in the country frankly split across Northern Ontario. Always felt welcome in Northern Ontario but for the folks from S. Ontario (own extended family included) there is a severe disconnect on what life is like outside the Golden horse shoe and south shore of Quebec. Maritimer's get along with Albertans well because...well...so many of them are out here it's more like family reunions.

But despite the frustration there is also a simple desire...let me go to work, let me pay my bills, and quit micro-managing every aspect of my life and calling me evil because I work hard to support my family....especially when it is to buy votes in another part of the country.

A more positive tone, less vote buying in Central Canada at the cost of the west, and removal of some of the micro-managing aspects of Federal Policy/Legislation will help a ton.

Frankly if I was the Federal gov't I'd start with the MB Premier's list of nation-building infrastructure...a positive, mature response, directed at national benefit...and then look what can be done. It's a much better starting point than the AB Premier's whining list of change all legislation but does address some of the same concerns...and while shovels are digging then start to consider the more difficult piece of legislation change to be fairer across the country.
