Liberal (Minority/Majority) Government 2025 - ???

And yes, I have some friends that are still all in on the Carney brand of Liberals. Especially my wife's friends.

Thats great, they exercise their democratic right and chose a side. I have asked all of them what has he done well and not one can say a single thing he has done. Then again, they didn't even know anything about the Gordie Howe bridge deal until the day it happened and they still have no clue what it is about. My opinion (and Dave might point his finger at me sternly) is that the Liberals for the most part are politically ignorant.

And a Rick propaganda victory. My wife and I are friends with a local biker club. The president's son is a trans man (Gay man seeking to go woman), who grew a beard for his upcoming criminal trial. He did this because he is worried he will get a "conservative" judge.

We sat down over some beer, and discussed what his views were on Conservatives. He is now not pro conservative, but I broke the myths he was believing about conservatives.

Liberal MPs have that ability.

They have never shown that level of independence.
When was the last time a political party at any level of government did this in Canada? As in vote against their own government to take it down.

When we went to American style leadership contests and leaders getting to pick candidates, party caucuses lost the ability turf their leaders implicitly. It's sad, I wish our MPs had the ability to rebel, like in the UK. I would love to go back to our Westminster roots.

That's very different from what you were saying earlier.

Their constitution doesn't allow them to remove the party leader outside of an election loss. A leader can only voluntarily resign.

True. I stand corrected.

I asked Gemini. Apparently, sitting members have only taken down their own government once in Canadian history. NDP MLA Jim Walding took down the Manitoba NDP government by one vote against the budget in 1988. This is apparently the only time in Canadian history.

The big plan seems to be to turtle until the next election...giving the next person little chance to grow into the job. I like my representatoves to be willing to fight for Canada. I am just so frustrated with the inability of the CPC to get our of their own way and actually add value to the country.
With a majority government how do you see the new CPC leader fighting for Canada in a different way than what's currently happening?

The minute the LPC got a majority they went into transparency turtle mode and started moving important discussions in-camera and away from the public. The CPC complained and thr LPC shrugged.

The CPC wanted Parliament to investigate what the LPC government actually agreed to with the US on the Gordie Howe bridge. The LPC shrugged and just voted against holding the proposed hearings.

The CPC wanted Parliament to investigate the $1.45b federal condo program, which raised questions about potential conflicts involving Mark Carney.  The LPC shrugged and just voted against holding the proposed hearings.

There was the recent committee fight over Canada Health Infoway's $300m PrescribeIT program. CPC and Bloc MPs pushed for further scrutiny after testimony raised questions about the program and contradictory statements involving the Health Minister. The committee's proceedings subsequently became bogged down, including disputes over whether matters should be dealt with publicly or behind closed doors.

The only accountability, if you could call it that, for federal politicians is our lame duck Question Period in Parliament - which PM Carney doesn't bother showing up to most of the time.

I just don't see what swapping out the CPC leader at this point would change when the LPC hold all the cards.

I never said it had happened.

No sitting government is ever going to have it’s MPs vote to bring itself down.

Its a sad state of affairs... We Canadians accept to little by way of performance and conduct from our Govs and Politicians.

So, consistent with another (relatively) progressive conservative, who had a transparency issue with the opposition…

Is this an excuse or deflection ?

Or does it make it more comfortable to accept continued shitty representation ?

100%. Power corrupts and Canadians like giving our politicians that power.

How do we stop politicians from being able to vote to hide what they're doing from us?

Neither, confirmation of what Jarnhammer notes below. Are we to believe that any party that gets into a majority position *will actually walk-walk the talk-talk of transparency?

Have a political system that has greater inclusion of all parties. FPTP has issues, but no matter the push by the electorate to have some form of improved representation, or the promises of parties to do so, it dies on the vine because in the end, it’s about power and influence. I honestly don’t think things will change. The opposition will claim that the incumbent government is horrible and not transparent. The only *change is who is actually complaining about whom…it is a cycle, always has been, likely always will be.

We need a mechanism to hold politicians accountable, or fire them, that's better than "vote for someone else in 4 years".

but we didn't accept it so stop beating the public please. We elected a minority albeit a strong minority government. The largest elected group promptly went out and bribed a few opportunists or simply vulnerable individuals to achieve majority status. That is not the fault of the voting public but simply individual avarice.

4 time CPC Marilyn Gladu said funding to her district was cut and the Liberals said if she crosses the floor she will get the funding back.

Canadians basically having their shop window broken then buying protection from people holding rocks.

Canadians elected this Gov and seem to happy with their conduct, purchase of a majority included.

Yes, Canadians get the Gov the deserve.

Canadian's should expect better. And one shouldn't use 11 years old articles to justify or defect from present poor performance.

Expect and partake in the political system to support better outcomes.

Neither justification, nor deflection. Juxtaposition is valid, particularly when someone today is critiquing others for the same behaviour that they were a part of 11 and even more years ago.

Whatever helps you sleep at night.
I’ve been sleeping fine under Mulroney, Campbell, Chretien, Martin, Harper, Trudeau and Carney, thanks, even though all those PMs were at one time or another accused of eschewing transparency during their governing. I’ve done what I’ve needed to do to both participate positively in Canada’s political system and to ensure my own household is in order. Your attempt to imply that I am deluded or deliberately and willfully ignorant of some set of facts isn’t going to cause my sleep to be any less restful, nor is it going to bless me with some new found enlightenment that the sooner Canadians dump Carney and get things back on track with Poilievre, the better we’ll all be.

We don't even need to go back 11 years.

Provinces are doing this on the daily as well. Conservative Premiers, Liberal Premiers, CAQ Premier, NDP Premier, they all do it.

The difference is for 6 years we had non stop minorities at the federal level so people just got accustomed to the transparency. It was not and never was the norm for the ruling party to help the opposition to defeat the ruling party. Harper didn't do it when he had a majority, Trudeau didn't when he has a majority, it was just because Trudeau and by extension Carney didn't have a majority that this was happening.

The current situation is far more the norm.
