There is exactly zero chance that Canada will become a full member. The process is long and the pipeline is already full of other countries going through the process of becoming members. Moreover, the EU "constitution" would have to be amended to allow any non-European nation to apply for membership - and consent to amend must be unanimously approved by each of the 27 member countries.

What's interesting is that right off the bat the Australians were like, 'Hold on their Mate, we may want to be involved in this too.'

Devil will be in the details once any agreement goes to parliament for ratification. If we can make it for European companies to set up shop here, all the better, especially combined with the new tax announcements and defense investment bank. The issue is whether Canadians get to see the parliamentary scrutiny and debate that leads to the decision.

Carney says this EU arrangement will go through Parliament and that it will all roll out transparently. If parts of the debate are moved In Camera Canadians can read the finished agreement without being able to hear the arguments, objections, questions and government responses that shaped it. Pretty important stuff.

In the absence of detail (or truth), we can speculate what associate member means.

Norway is not a full member but has had to give up some of it's sovereignty for the access it now has. Such as:

• The Four Freedoms: Norway permits the free movement of goods, services, capital, and people across its borders.
• EU Law Adoption: Norway must adopt thousands of EU rules and laws. These laws cover the workplace, consumer safety, and the environment.
• Financial Payments: Norway pays money into the EU budget to support poorer European regions.
• Regulatory Compliance: Norway follows EU climate and energy regulations without having a vote or a direct voice in EU institutions.

Do you see Canada getting a special better deal than these countries?
