17 Oct 2026: Major fire at CFB Wainwright

We do have a history of, at times, being less than transparent and willing to protect certain golden cows at all costs.

I can see the merit.
Which agency in Canada has the expertise to credibly examine Range management and live training practices?

How about we get over ourselves for a change and just expect to CAF to run a professional, credible investigation?

Maybe not having the experience could be a welcome change ? The powers that be should probably have to articulate the whys and the how's ect ect. And at a level that the families and 2x2 Canadians can understand.

Sometimes the error 'experts' make is in their inability to make themselves and their product relatable and understandable to Joe Public.

Love that idea.

Amen to that. What is the purpose of having an investigation unit if, when there is something to investigate, you don't get them to do it?

I hear you, and I generally trust the authorities to do proper work.

That said, as in conflict of interest, even if it's absolutely not "insider trading," so to speak, the perception can sometimes be enough.

I stand to be corrected, though, and think that, given the multiple layers of this specific pastry, there will be more than one probe looking at more than one element/factor, with a fair bit of opportunity for decent transparency to the public in a way that's accessible to Canadians who don't know much about the military.

Really?

You clearly were not around for the Somalia Inquiry.

A classic example of “an outside investigation” that had no idea of what they were looking at or the context in which it occurred.

I am very comfortable the CFNIS is independent of the Army.

The Same for the CFFM.

Nearly certain the BOI is ordered by the CDS and reports to her.

I literally said I loved your idea.

I hope CFNIS does a good job and presents an accurate, 100% truthful and transparent product. And I hope the CAF takes the recommendation to heart.

Apparently the Surgeon General, a year or so ago, participated in a national exercise with provincial ministries of health, examining national capacity to deal with the casualties resulting from major combat operations.

Hopefully that wargaming plus lessons learned from this incident can inform federal / provincial cooperation and preparedness.
