I believe some direction is incoming on that to lessen the need for Op BB.

I continue in the belief that Light Soldiers, by virtue of their inability to haul a bunch of gear around the countryside with them, are the basic building block of an army.

They need to learn how to soldier with the bare minimum of kit.

If they need more kit to do their job then that kit, and the necessary experts, need to be attached for the duration of the operation.

Need comms, add signallers.
Need info, add intops
Need defences, add sappers
Need guns, add gunners
Need armour, add tankers
.....

Basic soldiering, is what every militia soldier should be taught and be required to execute well. The Rifle Company is the basic element.

Anything beyond that, including all of the trades mentioned above, should require additional personal commitment and could be a supplementary task for the Company.

Eg - All 150 militia units should raise one Light Infantry Company - Cavalry units add a mobile troop, Arty add a gun troop, Engineers add a sapper troop, etc.

So we have thousands upon thousands of under equipped and non-mobile riflemen to augment or deploy as formed bodies, cool. What do we do if we need to augment RCAC, RCA, RCCS, etc? You mention add a troop...we now have a section minus available per unit for augmentation and an inevitable manning crisis throughout the non-infantry trades. Nevermind the loss of institutional memory, esprit de corps, training formats, etc that are necessary to properly train these other arms.

Perhaps instead of completely blowing up any augmentation capabilities for non-infantry trades, we should allocate more resources to grow and develop the units that already exist and provide the equipment necessary so people actually want to show up to train.

Follow after the French pattern and increase the number of sub-units in the Regular Regiments. Some of those sub-units are made up of time-expired regulars. Others could be made up of volunteers. The Regiment is responsible for ensuring that the people on strength are up to the standards required by the Regiment to fulfil its tasks. Or for choosing the appropriate people for the tasks assigned.

PS - Why do you assume that the attached sub-sub-unit is only a section? Why not task the militia unit with providing a fully functional group of 24-36 troops with the necessary skills, kit and rank structure to make them a useful appendage to a Regular unit?

Because that's how force generation works in a non general mobilization scenario. We train squadrons/companies to force generate a troop/platoon. We train troops/platoons to force generate a patrol/section. No reserve unit is sending an entire sub-unit out the door, we expect them to maintain and deploy up to a sub-sub-unit (and their mission statements reflect this).

It's just like the Navy, sustainably deploy one ship, you need three of the same class. Localize that to an armoured squadron for example and it looks like one troop deployed, one reconstituting and one on work-up/in training. It's not sustainable otherwise and even then it's fricking hard to keep up good training at home in the reserve context.
