Tactical Armoured Patrol Vehicle - RG-31, LAV Coyote, and (partial) G-Wagon Replacement

Right, I should put 15,000L of diesel and a squadrons worth of ammo in TLAVs...of course its going in trucks.
It doesn't belong in TLAV. It it should belong in MTVC, but we killed that to save money. And we didn't plan for a replacement under ACSV because that was just designed to replace platforms and variants that we had in service.

Show me an army anywhere that doesnt keep 1 DOS on trucks in their A1 echelons.
Most would keep that in their A2.

First Ukraine and now Mexico!

Meanwhile, in Australia, 4x4 PMVs

The Aussies are buying 268 more Bushmaster TCVs for their own use as well as 59 Strikemaster variants, each one to launch a pair of Kongsberg's 300 km NSMs.

And the Dutch are buying Bushmasters from the Aussies as well..

Quick comparison -

Bushmaster 12-15 tonnes, 300 HP, 10-12 Pax, 4x4

Mine STANAG 4569 Level 3 - Standard (8 kg AT mine)

Ballistic STANAG 4569 Level 1 - Standard (7.62x51 Ball at 30m)
Ballistic STANAG 4569 Level 3 - Option (7.62x51 AP at 30m)

Balistic STANAG 4569 Level 5 - Option (FSP 20mm at 25m simulating 155mm)

Senator 8.9 tonnes, 330 HP, 10 Pax, 4x4

Mine STANAG 4569 Level 3a - Standard (8 kg AT mine)

Ballistic STANAG 4569 Level 2 - Standard (7.62x39 API at 30m)

Oh boy, theres a team working on a plan to upgun the TAPVs...hilarity will ensue.
Upgun or repurpose?

I've we want to make a recce/surveillance vehicle out of them with better armament - then bad idea.

OTOH, if we want to turn them into something like armoured anti-air systems of various types - then why not. We have almost 500 armoured vehicles with lots of service life left on them. If you can turn them into something useful that we don't have now and need then it's a win.

Do we have any 113s around ?

Looks like upgun - autocannons and ATGM lol. Probably so CARBs have "armour" for the armour squadron.

Theyre way too clapped out. Time to let them die.
Deliveries of TAPVs ran from 2016 to 2018. They are babies in the armies inventory compared to just about every other vehicle. "Clapped out" is very subjective and VOR is also very dependent on the maintenance cycles they go through. I don't think any of these vehicles are beyond use. If they would be repurposed, part of the upgrade program should include an overhaul element.

Apparently some TLAV’s still around, or so my kid tells me…which are essentially upgraded 113’s.
I read something recently - can't recall where - that TLAVs are down to being counted by the handful. I doubt that there are enough useable hulls left worth keeping in service. Which I regret. They've been used for almost sixty years now and have done yeoman service.

I was talking about the TLAV.

In terms of TAPV, I dont really see any path for repurposing them. They just arent suited for much beyond patrolling. Id sooner see them sent to Svc Bn and MPs than repurposed into something theyre not. Theres plenty of options on the market for a lightish wheeled AFV, no need to make an ersatz one.

Still some ambs and MTVRs running aroundlatvia.

When my dad was in 2RCHA in Germany in the 60’s, they were just coming on line there. He had one that broke with only 13 miles on the odometer - engine block cracked…he said the name plate inside stated it was made by “ The Continental Can Company” from somewhere in Michigan…

Upgraded back in 2004 ish time frames.

Honestly I’d move the TAPV to the RCAF for their Security Force requirements.

Then hopefully see a cohesive strategy for equipping the CA units.

Light

LAV

Mech/Armoured.
Why do you hate the RCAF so much?

Honestly, I don’t think it’s that bad if used appropriately. It isn’t an awful road bound setup , now reconnaissance vehicle or anything like that it sucks. As an airfield security sort of response vehicle it’s a decent tool.

Honestly given the choice I’d give the RCAF LAV’s for that role and get the CA a tracked IFV but I am more thinking of an easy ‘zero cost’ employment option for the TAPV.

Sorry. Mea culpa.

I think they would make great AD vehicles. They are mine protected, have a level of armour and enough internal space that they could support the crew, equipment and ammunition storage for either a gun or cheap missile/rocket air defence system that could accompany LAV-based units and subunits. Slap on an appropriate MOOG lightweight RIwP and Bob's your uncle. To me that's a simple and cheaper solution than building a whole new fleet of ACSVs for the role. One benefit - when the TLAV eventually craps out then the RIwP can be repurposed on a newer vehicle.

If memory serves me correctly about two years ago we had about 60 or so left with another 60 or so being used for parts - that's probably changed since then.
